The dandelions have
changed color—
is that it, is summer over?
That pungent odor—
is it the boxwood shrubs
or is it elephant piss?
The spider’s web
is beautiful in the moonlight,
but let’s ask the moth.

Autumn leaves in my pond
desire but one thing—
a return to the trees.
Skimming the lawn
behind riding mowers
the barn swallows feast on bugs.
Twin crows debating
on a snow covered tree branch—
Heckle and Jeckle?

Early fall—
the still beach umbrellas
are contemplating the unknown.
A humid evening—
the housefly quits the wall
to make love to my nose.
Summer, and young boys persuade
old men to teach them the art of
waiting.
Married in haste in late June,
the naive young bride soon
had second thoughts.
